Well now. If you can’t tell, this is a new site under construction. So I beg your patience as I figure out how all of this works!
But what is all of this? Ahh, now that’s another story to tell. You can call me Khara, since that’s my current online moniker, and I am a former roleplayer from the Catskills shard of UO. In 1998, I started my first character on the shard. Oddly enough, I wasn’t a roleplayer in the beginning – I wouldn’t really have been able to tell you what a roleplayer WAS in that context. But during my adventures, I came across the fringes of a community of roleplayers who were really damn good at it. Then I came across some of their websites, and the stories their players wrote hooked me in a way I wasn’t expecting. Although I don’t remember all of the early ones, I DO remember stories from the Kingdom of Winterfell pages regarding the King and Queen at the time.
Well, I was intrigued, so I started paying more attention, and sure enough, my character managed to come across another by the name of Kyle Duskwalker. Or THE Kyle Duskwalker as I believe my character called him on their first introduction (which became an inside joke for us ever after). Between the Unsung Heroes and Virtue Village, the doorway opened to the community at large. And I never really looked back.
I consider myself very lucky to have been even a small part of that community. The people and characters I met propelled me through another five years. Seeing how they took a simple game and turned it into something so rich and deep still takes my breath away.
Which brings me back to this site, I suppose. Unfortunately, my days in UO ended during a very dark part of my life. It’s been seven years since I’ve truly roleplayed anything, and a mood of nostalgia had me digging through the files on my computer. To my surprise, I found many of my old stories, screenshots, and even the log files from the game. I’ve spent a couple weeks sifting through it all, and I can honestly say I regret having left it the way that I did. I lost touch with something important to me, and even worse, I lost touch with all of the wonderful folks I was fortunate enough to call friends.
So now I want to piece the memories back together in as coherent a fashion as I can. If only to recapture a little of what I once had. And share a little of it with anyone who happens to be interested.
I’m going to begin with the three characters that were the focus of my online life for most of those years. I had others, but these three will always hold a special place in my heart. Brenna of the Silver League was that first character I mentioned above. Elyriel Winters of Winterfell and (eventually) Trinsic followed. And my last character, the one I can honestly say was my favorite, was Anne Savant, a Sergeant in the Black Rose Society.
I’ll start at the beginning and try to cobble together the adventures that each of these ladies had. We’ll see how it goes from there.
If you’d like to take a walk down this lane with me, please do. I only hope you’ll find it as much fun as I do.
