A Slap to the Pride (story)log/story

(Originally posted 2/18/2002)

Barlow hovered nervously at one end of the hall and debated what to do. His staff huddled in the inn’s entryway and whispered to one another as more crashes and thumps resounded from the chamber at the far end of the wing. More than one had advised the innkeeper to call the guards, but Barlow was hesistant to do so. The tenent in that particular room belonged to the Rose, and he would rather pick a fight with one of the pit gladiators than with the Society. Wringing his hands in his apron, he finally decided to let the noise go – it sounded like it was subsiding anyway. He turned and shooed his staff back to their work. Besides, he reasoned, the lass never failed to pay in good coin. And why risk making her even more angry when she sounded furious enough?

Suck It Up (story)log/story

(Originally posted 2/1/2002)

Command had warned them that they might face overwhelming odds. But no one could have imagined it would be so bad. One second, they were in formation, singing songs to quell the anxiety and waiting for new intel from the scouts. The next, mass chaos ensued.

There was little warning. The horde of undead “things” swept up the stairwell and simply flowed over their lines. There was no other word for it – the enemy swept past ranks of Roses like they were nothing. Or perhaps the creatures now surrounding them were made of nothing. But their incorporeal wave snapped into hard steel and chilling cries. The black-clad soldiers had nowhere to run, no support from archers and magi now swarmed by nightmarish fiends. Horses and bodies clashed together into a giant melee.

Hauntings from the Past (story)log/story

(Originally posted 1/21/2002)

The root was being stubborn. Anne grumbled to herself as she thrust her dagger into the soft soil and tugged harder to pull the thing free. Coated in dirt, she had been walking and digging for two hours after leaving Jhelom. Tiring and concentrating on the task at hand, she never heard the man come up behind her.

A filthy hand clamped down over her mouth, and another grabbed the wrist of her dagger-wielding hand. Her heart skipped a beat as nightmare memories screamed back. Not again! Old fears mixed with new and completely paralyzed her.

Anne Savant – Private 3rd to Private 1stlog/story

As excited as I was to bring Anne into the Black Rose Society’s ranks, it would be a few more days before they could actually swear her in.  The Society’s headquarters was still controlled by the “bad” Roses, so the guildstone was out of reach for both RP and practical purposes.  Not that that really proved to be much of a problem.  Anne and I had a blast just shadowing the troop during the interim, offering what aid we could.  During a couple skirmishes, in which the “good” Roses came away with a couple captives, Anne had a brief chance to trot out her knowledge of herb lore and tried to provide a sedative.  The soliders under control by the rings had a bad habit of dying when captured.  While the sedative wasn’t foolproof – I was intruding on their fiction a bit with it – at least Anne could try to help.  Aside from that, she had to take a back seat to most of the action until the Soceity could settle things for themselves.

Anne Savant [BRS] – Beginnings

I created Anne after a few months away from UO to play DAoC.  When I came back, Elyriel was still largely retired, Brenna had faded into the background, and T’yre was just wandering around as usual.  After the first failed attempt to bring the Wraith children out into the world, I really didn’t want to try playing Jerid again.  So I decided to start fresh.

Anne Savant – Beginningslog/story

I created Anne after a few months away from UO to play DAoC.  When I came back, Elyriel was still largely retired, Brenna had faded into the background, and T’yre was just wandering around as usual.  After the first failed attempt to bring the Wraith children out into the world, I really didn’t want to try playing Jerid again.  So I decided to start fresh.

Since Wraith’s player had taken his character to the Black Rose Society for a while, I had my first opportunity through Elyriel to really meet some of them.  I had always known about the troop, and I had seen them around quite often.  But I had never seen the full scale operation.  As Elyriel, I was able to witness the Roses taking a seat on the Jhelom Tribunal.  I was very impressed with what I saw, so I figured, what the hell?  Let’s try the life of a mercenary!

Before I move on to Anne…

Before I start in on Anne’s life, I’d like to share a few bits of conversations and quotes that I’ve been collecting up as I’m going through my log files.  These are little blurbs made me laugh outright as I went along.  Some of them are completely silly, others were just very representative of the characters themselves.  Anyway, I figured I would share the collection I have now.  I may add to this if I come across anything new.

Elyriel Winters [Tri] – The City Guard, Married Life, and the Wraith Children

Once Elyriel settled into life in Trinsic, she had very little desire to go anywhere else.  She obtained her citizenship after the requisite time period, and for a goodly while she was content to live, plan her wedding to Wraith, and defend the city when called upon.  Aside from her carefree days back at Stark, this was the best time of her life.

Trinsic as a city had a history of trouble, though, and becoming stationary just meant that trouble came to Elyriel.
